Phil Schlein, 73, has more than forty years experience in venture capital, retail and technology companies. As a partner in U.S. Venture Partners, Phil has advised young companies on strategy, recruiting and finance since 1985.
Prior to joining U.S. Venture Partners, Phil had a successful 28 year career as an operating executive with R.H. Macy, Inc. He served as President and CEO of Macy's California from 1974 to 1985 during which time it became the dominant department store in California. Phil served on the R.H. Macy Inc. Board of Directors from 1977 to 1985. He also served on the Board of Directors of Apple Computer, Inc. for eight years from 1979 to 1987.
Phil is currently a director of one publicly traded company, Gottschalk’s. He also serves on the Board of Directors for several private companies, including SoundID, AuctionDrop, Catalyst Homes, Tea Living, and Specialty’s Café and Bakery.
Phil has been a co-founder of The Halo Fund Management Company, The Halo Fund II Management Company, and The Halo Opportunity Fund Management Company. In 2007, Phil agreed to be the Industry Consulting Partner for Consumer/Retail Technology and serves on the management team of The Halo Fund III Management Company. For the last 8 years, he has also been a member of The Angels’ Forum.
An active supporter of The Kauffman Foundation and The Kauffman Fellow Program, Phil has been the mentor of The Halo Fund’s past and present Kauffman Fellows. He is also an Advisory Board Member for Santa Clara’s Retail Management Institute. Phil holds a B.S. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
